How Do I Measure Out a Pound of Weed and Feed
Details
Solutions Weed & Feed 15-5-10, manufactured by Solutions Pest & Lawn, is a specially formulated product that keeps lawns weed-free and healthy.
This fertilizer is made with Trimec to control numerous types of weeds, such as dandelions and clover. Solutions Weed & Feed also contains a blend of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and additional ingredients called a micronutrient pack, to promote health and longevity to turf grass.
Solutions Weed & Feed has a slow-release nitrogen fertilizer that is less likely to burn grass and results will be seen in as quickly as 30 days. Solutions Weed & Feed is a great product to have in a lawn care kit that will help generate thick, green and weed-free grass during the spring season.
Tools Needed
To apply Solutions Weed & Feed, you will need to broadcast the product with a push spreader or hand spreader. It is also helpful to have a scale and bucket to measure out how much product you need based on your treatment area.
How to Use
- Step 1: Prepare your lawn by mowing it to its normal height 1 to 2 days before application, and water your lawn thoroughly at least 1 day before application. Mowing your lawn ensures a less dense treatment area, allowing the fertilizer an easier time to reach the soil. Watering ensures your soil does not go dry during treatment, which could negatively impact the effectiveness of this product.
- Step 2: Calculate the amount of Solutions 15-5-10 Weed & Feed Fertilizer with Trimec to use by calculating your treatment areas square footage. Do this by multiplying the areas length by its width. For most applications you will need to apply 3.2 to 4.0 pounds of product per 1,000 square feet of treatment area.
- Step 3:When its time to apply, load your spreader with the proper amount of Solutions 15-5-10 Weed & Feed with Trimec and put the spreader on the correct setting for your specific spreader model (check the label for details). If you are unsure which setting to use with your spreader, you can test your spreader settings on 250 sq. ft. of turf. You are aiming to apply at a rate of 1 pound of product per 250 sq. ft., so adjust your settings until this rate is reached. You can use a bucket and weight scale to measure the amount you need. Try to time your application towards the morning so the grass is wet with dew. If the grass is not covered with dew when applying, lightly sprinkle the lawn with water before applying the product.
- Step 4:Evenly distribute all of your Solutions 15-5-10 Weed & Feed Fertilizer with Trimec throughout your treatment area. With a push spreader, broadcast half your granules at a perpendicular angle to cover the area in its entirety. You can do this by beginning to broadcasting the product starting at the edge of the lawn and walk all the way around the perimeter of the yard at a steady pace. Then walk back and forth across the yard to cover the space in the middle. Make sure you have applied the product on a day without rainfall, and water your lawn again 1 to 2 days after application. This will give the product time to properly absorb into the treated weeds.
Where to Use
Solutions 15-5-10 Weed & Feed Fertilizer with Trimec can be applied to warm season grasses like bermudagrass, zoysiagrass, St. Augustinegrass, Bahiagrass, and centipedegrass. It can also be applied over cool season turf like Kentucky bluegrass, fescues, and perennial ryegrass.
Apply Solutions 15-5-10 Weed & Feed Fertilizer with Trimec directly to your lawn, and sweep any product that may have landed on the driveway, sidewalk, gutter, or street back into the treatment area.
Do not use near desirable plants or around trees and shrubs with exposed roots. Do not use on this product on 'Floratam' St. Augustinegrass.
When to Use
For the best results, apply Solutions 15-5-10 Weed & Feed Fertilizer with Trimec during your turfs growing season, typically in spring, and when weeds are young and actively growing. A second application may be necessary after 30 days if the lawn is heavily overrun by weeds or if adverse low moisture conditions prevail and weeds are in a state of poor growth.
Safety Information
Solutions 15-5-10 Weed & Feed Fertilizer with Trimec is safe to use around children and pets when used according to the product label instructions. Always wear the proper personal protective equipment (PPE) when handling or applying this product.
Special Considerations
Solutions 15-5-10 Weed & Feed Fertilizer with Trimec comes in a 50 pound bag composed of 15% Nitrogen, 5% Phosphorus, and 10% Potassium. We recommend you conduct a soil test at least once a year to figure out how much of each nutrient your lawn needs. Typically, a lawn needs at least 1 pound of Nitrogen per 1,000 sq. ft. per growing season.
Use this product in conjuction with an additional fertilizing program to achieve this. Be careful not to add too much Nitrogen, as this will encourage weed growth & other adverse effects in your lawn.

Keith's Pro Tip | "When spreading fertilizer, it is best if you move at a steady and quick pace, like a fast walk. This will help you evenly distribute the fertilizer. Move too slow, and you might get clumps of fertilizer. Move too fast, you might end up with light distribution or have product go in non-target areas. " |
Product Drawbacks | Solutions Weed & Feed is not safe to use around or near desirable plants or exposed roots of trees and shrubs. To control weeds in such locations, use a liquid spot treatment product like Glyphosate 4 Plus Weed Killer in a pump sprayer. |

Do not use on FlorAtan St Augustine grass
I assumed, based on the product description, that this would be beneficial to help my St. Augustine grass continue to strengthen the lawn roots in preparation for the growing season. Three weeks later the lawn is parched dry and burnt. The lawn mower marks are all over. After much aggravation, I find that this product is not good for floratan variety of St. Augustine. Nowhere is this specified in the product description!

I bought a weed and feed from a well known company. In small print it says it will damage shade trees. Will you product damage shade trees?
BEST ANSWER: Since it is trimec that is a broadleaf herbicide. Typically with a weed and feed it stays at ground level so there will not be any damage. The trimec will cause damage if it is applied to the leaves of bushes and plants. The product will also need water to activate if the bushes or plants are damp at the time of application then it would cause damage.
